How do you avoid stomach problems in Morocco? We get asked this a lot — so here are a few practical tips for your trip, from our own experience living here:

  1. Drink bottled or filtered water. Your stomach is not used to the local tap water yet, so stick to bottled or filtered water — and think about ice in drinks and rinsing your toothbrush, too.
  2. Go for freshly cooked, hot food. A busy place where the food is cooked in front of you is usually a good sign. Wash or peel fruit, and take it easy with raw salads for the first few days.
  3. Give your stomach a few days to adjust. New spices, more oil and a change of routine all take some getting used to. Ease in, and drink plenty of water — especially after a surf session in the sun.
  4. Wash your hands more often. Simply handling local cash exposes you to a lot of bacteria — money passes from hand to hand, and you never know where those banknotes and coins have been.
  5. Avoid swimming or surfing after heavy rain. The runoff and temporary rivers created by the rain wash a lot of debris and pollutants straight into the ocean.
  6. Bring preventive medication with you — specifically things you already know work well for you.
  7. Don’t let fear ruin your trip. As we said, it definitely does not happen to everyone.
