How do you avoid stomach problems in Morocco? We get asked this a lot — so here are a few practical tips for your trip, from our own experience living here:
- Drink bottled or filtered water. Your stomach is not used to the local tap water yet, so stick to bottled or filtered water — and think about ice in drinks and rinsing your toothbrush, too.
- Go for freshly cooked, hot food. A busy place where the food is cooked in front of you is usually a good sign. Wash or peel fruit, and take it easy with raw salads for the first few days.
- Give your stomach a few days to adjust. New spices, more oil and a change of routine all take some getting used to. Ease in, and drink plenty of water — especially after a surf session in the sun.
- Wash your hands more often. Simply handling local cash exposes you to a lot of bacteria — money passes from hand to hand, and you never know where those banknotes and coins have been.
- Avoid swimming or surfing after heavy rain. The runoff and temporary rivers created by the rain wash a lot of debris and pollutants straight into the ocean.
- Bring preventive medication with you — specifically things you already know work well for you.
- Don’t let fear ruin your trip. As we said, it definitely does not happen to everyone.
