Culture, etiquette and Ramadan

Small gestures make a big difference in a small village. How to be a welcome guest — including during Ramadan.

Imsouane is a working fishing village before it is a surf spot. People here are warm, curious and patient with visitors — especially visitors who make a small effort.

Greetings and language

Moroccan Arabic (Darija) and Amazigh (Tamazight) are widely spoken, with French common and English increasingly so in surf areas. A few words go a long way: salam alaikum (hello), shukran (thank you), bslama (goodbye).

Dress

Swimwear belongs on the beach. In the village, cafés and towns, cover shoulders and knees. It is a small sign of respect that is noticed and appreciated.

Photos

Ask before photographing people, especially women and children, and accept a no gracefully. Fishermen at work are often happy to chat but not always to be photographed.

Food and hospitality

If you are invited for tea, accept at least one glass. Eat with your right hand when sharing a dish. Alcohol is not part of village life; be discreet.

Religion

Islam shapes daily rhythms, including the call to prayer. In general, non-Muslims do not enter mosques in Morocco, with a few notable exceptions in big cities.

Ramadan

Ramadan is the month of fasting from dawn to sunset. Its dates move each year with the lunar calendar. It is a beautiful time to visit — evenings come alive after ftour, the breaking of the fast — but days are quieter, and some cafés close or change hours.

  • Avoid eating, drinking or smoking openly in the street during daylight.
  • Expect slower services and changed opening times.
  • If you are invited to share ftour, it is a privilege — say yes.
