The surf spots of Imsouane

Two very different waves share one headland: the long, gentle peel of the bay and the more exposed break around the corner.

Imsouane is built around a headland. On one side the swell wraps into a sheltered bay; on the other it hits open beach. That simple geography gives you two very different days of surfing a few minutes apart.

The Bay (Magic Bay)

The wave that made Imsouane known: a right-hand point break that peels along the bay from near the harbour. On a good swell the rides are remarkably long, the face is soft and forgiving, and it is a wonderful place to learn to trim and turn. It needs a decent swell to wake up, and because it is so friendly, it gets busy.

  • Best for: beginners on small days, improvers and longboarders.
  • Watch out for: crowds, boats near the harbour, and the long walk back up the point.

Cathedral Point

On the other side of the village, named after the cliff that rises behind it. More exposed to the swell, so it is often bigger and more powerful than the bay, with peaks breaking left and right. On the right day it is excellent; on a big day it is for experienced surfers only.

  • Best for: intermediate to advanced surfers.
  • Watch out for: currents, closeouts on bigger swells, and rocks at certain tides.

Etiquette in the lineup

Long waves mean long waits. Respect the priority of the surfer closest to the peak, do not drop in, paddle wide around the riders, and keep hold of your board. A smile and a "salam" go a long way with local surfers.

Safety

Conditions change quickly with tide and swell. If you are unsure, watch for twenty minutes before paddling out, ask someone local, and never surf alone on an unfamiliar day.
