When to surf Imsouane: a season-by-season guide

Imsouane works all year, but the ocean changes with the seasons. What to expect from autumn to summer — and how to choose your dates.

There is no bad month to be in Imsouane, but there are better months for different surfers. The bay faces the open North Atlantic, so what reaches it depends on storms far away and on the local wind.

Autumn (September–November)

Often a favourite. The first proper swells of the season start to arrive, the water still holds some summer warmth and the village is calmer than in high season. A good balance for improving surfers.

Winter (December–February)

The most consistent and powerful swells usually arrive in winter. This is when the bay can produce its famously long rides, and when the more exposed breaks get serious. Beginners can still surf on smaller, sheltered days — just be guided by people who know the spot. Mornings and evenings are cool; bring layers.

Spring (March–May)

Swells keep coming, days get longer and warmer, and afternoons can get windier. A great all-round season.

Summer (June–August)

Smaller, gentler waves and more frequent wind — ideal for first lessons and longboarding, and busy with holidaymakers. Expect more people in the water at the friendliest spots.

Water temperature and wetsuits

The Atlantic here is cooler than many people expect. As a rough guide, a 3/2 mm full suit covers most of the year, with a 4/3 mm welcome in the colder months. If you feel the cold, err on the warmer side.

How to choose

  • First time on a board: late spring to early autumn, when waves are smaller and the water friendlier.
  • Improving: autumn and spring.
  • Looking for the longest rides: the heart of winter, with flexible dates if you can.

Every season is different. Tell us your level and dates and we will give you an honest forecast of what to expect.
