Staying safe and healthy in Morocco
Common-sense advice for a relaxed trip: in the water, on the road, in the sun and around town.

Morocco is a welcoming country and Imsouane is a calm village. Most problems guests have are small and avoidable.
In the ocean
- Surf within your level, and ask about conditions before paddling out.
- Learn to spot rip currents and how to get out of one: stay calm, paddle parallel to the beach.
- Stay clear of fishing boats near the harbour.
Sun and heat
The breeze makes the sun feel gentler than it is. Use high-factor sunscreen, reapply after every session, drink plenty of water and take shade in the middle of the day.
Food and water
Many travellers stick to bottled or filtered water to be safe. Freshly cooked, hot food is usually a good bet; wash or peel fruit. If your stomach rebels, rest, rehydrate and see a pharmacist — Moroccan pharmacies are a good first stop for minor issues.
On the road and in towns
- Keep valuables out of sight in busy places and markets.
- Agree taxi fares or check the meter before you start.
- Be polite but firm with unsolicited guides; a smile and "la, shukran" (no, thank you) works.
Insurance and emergencies
Travel insurance that covers surfing and medical evacuation is essential. Save local emergency numbers and your embassy's contact details before you travel, and tell someone at the house if you head off alone.
